Noopept is a synthetic proline-containing dipeptide-derived nootropic (ethyl ester of cycloprolylglycine) sold over-the-counter in Russia and as an unregulated research chemical elsewhere, with strong preclinical rodent data but only small, mostly Russian, human studies.

What it does & how it works
Noopept is rapidly hydrolyzed in vivo to cycloprolylglycine, an endogenous cyclic dipeptide, which is considered its principal active metabolite; this metabolite and the parent compound have been reported to modulate AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptor function, potentiate alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-dependent interneuron activity in the hippocampus, and upregulate NGF and BDNF expression. In rodent Alzheimer's-disease models it has also been reported to reduce amyloid-beta-associated pathology and tau hyperphosphorylation and to attenuate neuronal apoptosis.
Typical results seen in research
Rodent studies show consistent improvements in spatial memory and reduced markers of neurodegeneration in amyloid-beta and Alzheimer's-model paradigms. In humans, evidence is much thinner: small Russian clinical studies (e.g., in post-stroke patients with mild cognitive impairment) report symptomatic benefit, but these are limited in size, often unblinded or minimally controlled, and have not been replicated in large independent Western trials, so human efficacy claims should be treated as preliminary.
